              The tourism industry has been developed as a major employer and revenue earning segment of the state. The state government has undertaken a number of inter­-structural and other development schemes to facilitate the development of this segment. In order to attract foreign tourists to Assam, the government has organized several tourism festivals in the state and participated in many tourism fairs in the country and abroad.


Significant steps were taken by the government in the field of tourism development:

Majuli Heritage and Environment Tourism Project.
Tourist Attendance and Reception Center, Paltanbazar, Guwahati.
Medium and  mall interstitial projects.
The Chief Minister's self­help tourism schemes such as roadside Dhaba, construction of passenger accommodation and other amenities, etc.

          The number of tourists visiting the state has increased significantly as a result of the development of various amenities for tourists. The increase in this number is evident from the following figures:


The number of tourists visiting the state has increased from 10 lakh (2001­2002) to 22 lakh (2004­2005). In order to make Guwahati more attractive to the tourists, a plan has been taken to enhance the beauty of Guwahati. The number of ships and passengers arriving and departing from Guwahati has already increased. Preparation for construction of Jorhat Chukafa Coordination Field. Kamakhya Hills Traveler Project. Integrated field in front of Kaziranga. Chamguri water sports etc.
